EDG is open source!
There's not a lot to rejoice about these days, with the usual WTFs coming from the US, the majority of French politicians being surprised because it turns out that one of the top members of the far-right party is an antisemite (duh!), and kids being beaten by the French police because they want to have ... teachers.
There's still been some news that made me very, very happy: the Edison Design Group has open sourced their C++ Front-End!
I've been interested in compilers and C++ for more than 25 years, and I always thought of the Edison Design Group like a mysterious small group of extremely talented engineers doing things that nobody else can do.
For example, their Front-End is the only one to have ever supported export,
a feature so hard to implement (and niche) that they ended up
advocating
for it to be removed from the standard!
I've not been following compilers and C++ that closely lately so I have no idea how EDG fares against the two big players in the field, gcc and clang, but you can be sure that I will spend some time looking at and playing with the code.
I'm super excited! To be continued... :-)
