Status Report - Week 23 2025
So it looks like the idea of writing a weekly update will be more than a one-off \o/
Real life
There's a lot to love about the month of May: we're just out of a 4 day weekend, and have a 3 day one coming :-)
On the flip side, Nathalie's students start freaking out about their coming exams and ask for more sessions [1]. It's good for her business, but logistically challenging. Fortunately it'll be over in a few days.
We watched I Daniel Blake, a very good-but-also-super-sad movie. I like to think that my kids are aware of how lucky we are, still it's worth having refreshers from time to time.
At age 43, I finally read my first book by Gabriel García Márquez, 100 years of solitude and it was awesome. Now the problem is that my "I need to read those" list, already very long, just got longer :-)
And finally, a bit more running this week: 26.5km. Nowhere near where I should be given that I'm, well, not really working, but it's better than last week, so progress.
Open source
The "pipe situation" that I talked about here continued with a twist: ~rjarry found a much better fix to the initial problem. The time I spent investigating this was not lost however - I had fun and learnt - and that's one nasty bug less for aerc users \o/
I also submitted a patch to configure a duration after which a message being previewed in the message list split is considered as read. This addresses the friction of still having to explicitly open or mark read a message even if you've fully read it in the split view.
And I dug myself into a small rabbit hole on the SourceHut code front when I
wanted to highlight a few lines on git.sr.ht's file view
using something like aerc.1.scd#L725-734
, and noticed that it did not work.
To be able to investigate the issue, I had to submit a few patches to
sr.ht-container-compose
to make the git server work (
this,
this,
this and
that), and was
finally able to submit a
fix :-)
[1] One would hope it's "I know everything, but would like to refine a bit X" instead of "Oh sh... I haven't done anything in the last 5 years, please save me" sessions, but it's not :'(
