Status Report - Week 21 2026

May 25, 2026

Real life

This was another pretty routine week, with nothing much interesting to talk about. Temperatures are rising and I don't like this - especially because it means half of the Netherlands and Germany will come pile up on the beach and cause traffic jams in our street - but there's nothing we can do about it :-)

I'm not super motivated lately and spend too much time on YouTube, where I discovered a really excellent drummer, El Estepario Siberiano, who's really fun to watch. I generally really love people who just master their craft, and he's clearly one of them.

I had high hopes that Leinster would pose real problems to Bordeaux in the Champions Cup rugby finals, and was extremely disappointed. The game was very painful to watch, with Leinster playing one or two divisions below Bordeaux :'( My only hope left this year is that the Top 14 final is between Toulouse and Bordeaux and that Toulouse teach them a lesson :-)

On the reading from, I slowly continue La Guerre et la Paix II and Fundamentals of physics II, and since reading two books in parallel is apparently not enough, I decided to re-read The Red Atlas, that I found (again) excellent.

Finally, it was yet another mediocre week in terms of running, with only 18.76 km, and it was an OK week at GeoGuessr: I won 33 of my 68 duels, and secured a promotion back to Master IV.

In (very unlikely) case you're interested in GeoGuessr and like drama, head over to this. TL;DR: the player who was allowed back after a 3 year ban for cheating and finished 2nd in EMEA qualifications for this year's World Cup... was caught cheating again! I don't understand why you would cheat, all the more when you're already excellent at it without cheating - it's just sad...

Open source

I'm not doing anything big lately, but continue to pile up a bunch of (I think) nice improvements here and there.

For SourceHut, I implemented one of the follow-up tickets for my project hub GraphQL work, and in passing removed an unused file. I also fixed the command suggested to apply a patchset locally, that just did not work if the associated mailing list is private, and (after 6 months...) worked on addressing an issue with line selection in paste and dark mode.

I also fixed a few papercuts in sr.ht-container-compose, making build logs access actually work (patch) and improving my outstanding patch to create several users by default.

I found the latter when adding basic tests about object visibility to sr.ht-integration-testing (ticket and ticket).

While doing this, I noticed issues in hut's live documentation, that I patched here.

Finally, I spent a bit of time following up a message I received on the aerc IRC channel, and submitted a fix that is likely to explain a bunch of crashes that were reported lately on the mailing list.
